The Mother Son Dance is a relatively recent trend at Weddings, but because most of the attention is on the bride and her family, this is a great way for the Groom to have a nice moment to share with his mother.

Can someone tell me if the “mother and son” dance song – the lyric should be from a son to his mom or from a mom to his son?
Hao,
thanks for this question, especially on Mother’s Day Weekend. I think one can look at the “Groom and Mother” AKA “Mother-Son” dance song in 2 ways. One way is to assume the same is true of the Groom/Mother song as the Father Daughter dance song, which is traditionally about a Father giving away his daughter, the bride. If we are to assume that a Mother is “giving away” her son or simply saying goodbye in a way that actually means she’s happy for him, happy that he’s found a special person to share his life with, then this song would come from Mom’s prospective. The other way to look at it is that it’s the Groom’s chance to honor his mom for all the wonderful things she’s done for him, helping to support him through the years. A groom could select this song for his mom, or his mother could select it for her son…either way, the intention is sweet and loving and wonderful. The Groom and Mother dance is always a highlight at weddings. But remember, just as traditions have changed so much in culture throughout the past 25 years, so has this little tradition. We’ve seen Groom-Sister, Groom-Aunt, Groom and Family Friend dances, when a mother was not present, but the intention was the same. This moment simply honors the special bond between the groom and a special woman in his life. But don’t stop there, I have also seen Grooms dance with their father’s when mom wasn’t present, and in the most modern family situation, we’ve seen grooms who were raided by homosexual couple that danced with both “fathers” or “mothers”. This is why I love what we do, we honestly get to see so many diverse and wonderfully loving families come together to share in the joy of the most special day in a couple’s lives. So when you’re picking your song Hao, just remember to pick a song that has a special meaning for you and your mom, and as long as the song isn’t about two “lovers”, I imagine it’ll be just perfect!
Have fun, Happy Mothers Day and Best Wishes!
